Our ambition was to design and build a range of furniture for victims of natural disasters. We aimed to find a long-term solution, making high quality furniture more accessible. The ‘Rutabaga’ service utilises the skills of the local people through DIT (Do It Together) workshops and an enterprise model and provides them with training, employment and most importantly, pride, motivation and a sense of normality.
We have designed four essential pieces of furniture that can be cut from a sheet of bamboo; each follows a pattern system that allows space for the personalisation of shape and size, as well as decoration using local crafts such as canning and embroidery.
